Discover the Meaning of Birth Month Flowers

Celebrate Every Month with a Bloom That Represents You

Do you know what your birth month flowers are? Many of us know our birthstones, but not as many know much about their birth month flowers. Every month has its unique birth flower; however, not all are available through your local flower shop. Luckily, Forest of Flowers has some alternatives you can also choose from if you can't find the exact flower correlated with your month.

Having said that, shall we not go through the birth month of flowers from January through December? We think we should

January: Carnation & Snowdrop

Carnations, also known as Dianthus caryophyllus, are one of the blooms of January. "Dianthus" translates to "flower of the gods" in Greek and comes in a variety of colours associated with different symbolism. Most commonly, they're associated with feelings of purity, generosity, and love, and come in an expansive range of colours, including white, yellow, pink, purple, and red.

Carnations have long, thin stems with angular leaves, while the blooms consist of a bundle of crimped petals. These blooms are long-lasting and work great for hand-timed bouquets and arrangements.

Snowdrops, also called Galanthus, which translates to “milk flower” in Greek, are best known for their white, droplet-shaped blooms. They symbolize hope, renewal, and purity. Despite their delicate appearance, these blooms hold up even in cooler weather.

Substitutions: Carnations are readily available at most local flower shops, but if you prefer a more “dainty” look, you can opt for mini carnations. Snowdrops, on the other hand, are much rarer and can easily be replaced with white baby’s breath.

Pretty 'n' Pink Carnations Arrangement.

February: Violet & Primrose

Violets belong to the Viola genus, which includes over 500 species of flowering plants. They symbolize humility and faithfulness, making them the perfect February bloom to represent the month of love. Some forms of violets have an almost clover-like shape and exist in various shades of violet, or bluish-purple and yellow.

Primroses, despite the presence of the word “rose” in the name, don’t look at all like the original. They belong to the Primula genus, which, like violets, includes over 500 species of flowering plants. They symbolize youth, renewal, and lasting love. These blooms have heart-shaped petals and come in a variety of vibrant colours such as pink, yellow, purple, and orange.

Both plants are more suited for a pot or garden than for bouquets or arrangements. However, there are some substitutes:

For violets, you can opt for purple liatris, as they closely match the colour theme. Primroses can be replaced with spray roses or daisies.

Surrounded by Love Table Arrangement

March: Daffodil

The mighty daffodil, a yellow, star-shaped flower known for representing renewal and new beginnings – a perfect springtime flower, indeed. Daffodils belong to the Narcissus genus, which includes many species and hybrids. They come in various colours, but are most commonly seen in varieties of yellow with kisses of orange. Although they also exist in white and even pink.

Daffodils are occasionally available in your local flower shop seasonally, but there are other options you can choose if you can’t find them:

Yellow or white tulips are a great substitute, but you can also opt for gerbera daisies.

A Bright New Day Arrangement.

April: Daisy & Sweet Pea

As April showers prepare the soil for May flowers, daisies are already springing to life. These blooms are commonly seen in shades of white, with thin petals surrounding a circular centre. The common daisy is known as Bellis perennis. The word "daisy" comes from the Old English “dæges eage”. This translates to “day’s eye,” which is a reference to how the bloom opens during the day and closes at night. Daisies symbolize innocence, purity, and cheerfulness. Daisies come in various shades, but the most iconic is certainly the white variety.

Sweet peas, on the other hand, are multi-petaled, pink blooms with a stunningly sweet and floral fragrance. Sweet peas are scientifically known as Lathyrus odoratus and are popularly featured in shades of pink and white.

Daisies are easy enough to find in flower shops, with several types and colours available. Sweet peas are less common but can easily be substituted with pink and white snapdragons.

True Romance Arrangement

May: Lily of the Valley & Hawthorn

Lily of the Valley, unlike their larger counterpart, is a flower with several small bell-shaped blooms, commonly found in white. Lily of the Valley is scientifically known as Convallaria majalis. They are well-regarded for their powerful, floral fragrance and are a popular scent note in perfumes. Lily of the Valley symbolizes sweetness, humility, and the return of happiness. They’re also popularly given as “forgive me” flowers.

Hawthorn, these beautiful, tiny blooms consisting of five petals in shades of pink and white, are commonly found on trees and shrubs. They’re a part of the Crataegus genus and are a member of the rose family (Rosaceae). They represent hope, fertility, and protection.

Lily of the Valley can sometimes be found in flower shops, but if you can’t find them, traditional white lilies work simply fine. Hawthorn, being a tree/shrub bloom, is less common. You can opt for baby’s breath (in white or can be coloured pink) or Queen Anne’s Lace.

Wintry Whites Arrangement.

June: Rose & Honeysuckle

Roses, a true classic. Roses belong to the Rosa genus, which includes over 300 species and thousands of cultivars. They represent love, passion, strong bonds, and even secrecy. These bulb-shaped blooms open their petals as they age, becoming large and stunning flowers. They come in a variety of colours, but the most popular are certainly red, white, pink, and yellow. However, they are available in a rainbow of hues.

Honeysuckles are a unique, tubular-shaped bloom that is popular amongst pollinators and hummingbirds. They have a strong, sweet scent. Honeysuckle belongs to the Lonicera genus, which includes over 180 species of shrubs and vines. They symbolize devoted love, happiness, and bonds of affection.

Roses are pretty much always available at flower shops, unless you seek them out during peak seasons — AKA, the end of the day on Valentine’s Day. Honeysuckles are uncommonly found in flower shops but can be replaced with snapdragons.

Simply Beautiful Arrangement

July: Larkspur & Water Lily

Larkspur are tall plants covered in small blooms. They’re usually a blueish-purple but are also available in white and pink. Larkspur belongs to the Delphinium genus, which includes about 300 species of flowering plants. They symbolize lightness, levity, and an open heart.

Water lilies are an aquatic bloom commonly found in freshwater. Water lilies belong to the family Nymphaeaceae. These star-shaped blooms sit on top of lily pads and are often found in shades of white and pink. Water lilies symbolize purity, enlightenment, and rebirth.

Larkspur can usually be found seasonally but can be substituted for snapdragons. Water lilies are not easy to keep in store, given that they live in a completely aquatic environment. If you want the same stunning “oomph” of a water lily, opt for stargazer lilies or hydrangeas.

Something Extra Special Arrangement.

August: Gladiolus & Poppy

Gladiolas, also known as sword lilies, belong to the genus Gladiolus, which comprises approximately 300 species. These plants are tall with spikes of trumpet-shaped flowers that come in several colours, like pink, red, yellow, white, and purple. They symbolize strength, integrity, and remembrance. They are also popularly given during difficult times, such as after major surgery.

Poppies, on the other hand, are popular flowers, particularly during Remembrance Day. Poppies belong to the Papaver genus, which includes over 100 species of flowering plants. Immortalized in the historical poem by John McCrae, these open blooms with dark centres are most commonly found in red but also come in different shades. Poppies symbolize remembrance, peace, and consolation.

Gladiolas can typically be found at most local flower shops and are notable features in large arrangements. Poppies, however, are not as readily available, and it’s more likely you’ll find them as pins than you will fresh. Instead, red carnations can be a great substitute.

White Tranquility Funeral Tribute

September: Aster & Morning Glory

Asters are daisy-like flowers with a central yellow or gold center surrounded by ray-like petals in hues such as purple, blue, pink, and white. Asters are a part of the Asteraceae family, with the name “Aster” coming from the Greek word “star”, an homage to their shape. Asters symbolizes love, wisdom, and patience.

Morning glories, a climbing plant typically found in gardens, are known for their wide, almost trumpet-shaped flowers. They come in various shades of blue, purple, and pink. Morning glories belong to the Convolvulaceae family, with the genus Ipomoea being the most common. They symbolize love, affection, and the fleeting nature of life.

Many florists carry asters, but if they don’t, daisies or chrysanthemums can be used as a substitute. Morning glories are more of a garden flower, but gerbera daisies can work as a substitute.

Happy Days Yellow Happy Face Mug

October: Marigold & Cosmos

Marigolds, a popular garden flower known for their sunny hues of orange and yellow. Marigolds belong to the Tagetes genus, with over 50 species. Generally, marigolds are commonly found in shades of orange, yellow, and burnt citrus. Marigolds symbolize passion, creativity, and warmth.

Another daisy-like bloom, cosmos has broad petals and slender stems. Cosmos flowers belong to the Cosmos genus, with the most common species being Cosmos bipinnatus and Cosmos sulphureus. You can find these delicate blooms in pink, yellow, orange, and white. The name "cosmos" comes from the Greek word kosmos, meaning "order" or "harmony," which is a homage to the flower’s overall structure. Cosmos symbolizes harmony, balance, beauty, and peace.

Marigolds are often found in the garden and are not as popular in flower shops. Carnations, both orange and red, make great substitutions. Cosmos, resembling daisies, can be replaced with the aforementioned blooms or gerberas.

Gorgeous Gem Tones Arrangements.

November: Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemums, also just called “mums”, belong to the Chrysanthemum genus in the daisy family (Asteraceae). They are large, bulb-like blooms with almost spider-like petals, although they have several appearances based on the type. They come in shades of white, yellow, red, orange, pink, and purple. Chrysanthemums symbolize longevity, joy, and optimism.

Chrysanthemums are available in a lot of stores! But, if not, hydrangeas make a perfect substitute if you want more “pompom” or bulb shape.
Basket Of Dreams Arrangements.

December: Narcissus & Holly

Narcissus is both the scientific and common genus name, and refers to daffodils, jonquils, and paperwhites. The popular colour of December is white, and the bloom features a trumpet-like shape. In Greek mythology, these blooms are connected to the tale of Narcissus, who fell in love with his reflection. Having said that, these blooms symbolize rebirth, renewal, and self-reflection.

Holly, on the other hand, is not known primarily for its blooms, but for its spiked leaves and red berries. Holly belongs to the Ilex genus, which includes over 400 species of evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs. Holly symbolizes protection, fertility, and eternal life, and is immensely popular around Christmas time.

Narcissus can be replaced by tulips or daisies, while holly can be easily replaced with hypericum berries.
